Culling through my pictures from the train journey it amazes me how varied the terrain is of this country. Having picture files to play with over the old printed pictures makes things so much easier. I can’t even begin to fathom the cost and aggravation it would have been to use an “old style camera” and roll film.
Lets get back to Glenwood Springs, CO. I remember this stop from when I took the Zephyr west to east a few years back. A “trainmate” explained to me in the 1st class lounge in Chicago how he made a quick trip to a “health store” across the street from the station and loaded up on “pot candy”. That jarred my memory on how the conductors admonished passengers to “stay on the platform close to the train”. The Zephyr was behind schedule so our time for the “smoking break” was pretty short.
Good-bye to Glenwood Springs:

Hanging off the side looking west:
Road crew! They gave us a wave when we gave them the whistle!
Doing all the copy and pasting of these pictures I’m overwhelmed how the terrain changes with almost every curve of the rails. Steve did this route crewing out to move the car to the west coast the previous week so it was old hat to him. Rick was texting a lot in the lounge which made no sense to me as this was his first train trip. I was in heaven on the platform!
The afternoon is moving on… shadows are getting longer:
Lovett: Grand Junction CO. The “varnish cars” ahead of us emptied out here. It was a “Road Scholar” tour. There was drama as the paramedics met the train. There was a section of bad rail which caused a lurch to the side that threw a man causing him to hit his head. Nothing serious from what I heard.
Steve and Lucy. With the sun getting low it is getting chilly!
Trackside drama!
Beautiful terminal which seems to be undergoing a rehab:
A line of locomotives which Walter says are going going to be rebuilt:
Empty cars on a siding:
What a compare and contrast from the scenery from the beginning of the day!
End of another great day. It was a bit too chilly for me on the platform. These two shots were taken from the lounge:
